The largest highway construction project in Virginia’s long-storied history, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion includes the creation of new twin tunnels that span the harbor as well as widening of all four-lane segments on the ten mile corridor. As part of this project, Drive provided the Engineer of Record for the Segment 2 ITS design. Drive was responsible for the overall ITS network and ATMS deployment, as well as equipment design for the islands and tunnels. This critical infrastructure and secure facility requires 100% camera coverage, an ATM system comprised of lane use control signs, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limits Signage (VSLs), and associated detection to manage current general-purpose lanes and future managed lanes (likely tolled lanes). This project also includes a robust overheight detection system to keep vehicles out of the tunnel. End to end fiber and redundant network communications are also being installed, as well as a brand-new Traffic Operations Center (TOC) on the north island and major upgrades to the current landside operations center to provide full redundancy in case of an emergency.
